Searching for a new job can be tough and the longer the search goes on, the more frustrating it can become. Often, people find it hard to land a new job because they are making common mistakes that are making their search much harder.

So, if you want to put yourself in a good position to land a new job before long, it is helpful to be aware of what a few of the most common mistakes are and how they can be avoided. If you are just starting your job search or you have been looking for a while, be sure to avoid these mistakes.

Not Committing Enough Time

Many people complain about not being able to land a job but actually put very little time or energy into finding one. It is helpful to treat job hunting as a job in itself by creating a routine for yourself, including searching for jobs, applying for roles, attending interviews and following up on applications. Of course, you do need to take a break, but it is also important that you are committing enough time to finding a job each day.

Not Being Flexible Enough

Another common mistake that people make is being too picky with the job that they want. You could be waiting a long time for a job that ticks all of the boxes to come up, so instead, you need to have some flexibility. Keep in mind that these days many jobs are hybrid or fully remote, so you may be able to cast a wider net and find work in a location that you previously would not have considered.

Not Putting Enough Time Into The Resume

Your resume will be your first point of contact with an employer, so you need to make sure that it reflects well and stands out from the crowd. If you are applying for jobs in the same or a similar field, you will find a chronological resume format to be the best choice. This is because it allows you to demonstrate your career path and experience in an easy-to-digest format.

Not Tailoring Job Applications

Following this, it is also important that you avoid falling into the trap of sending the same resume and application out to every online business. Employers will see through this and it shows that not much thought, care or effort has gone into the application. Instead, tailoring each application allows you to make your application suited to each job advert and this is how you make an impact and stand out to employers.

Lack Of Interview Prep

The interview stage is where most fall down, but this is usually due to a lack of preparation. Being well prepared will help you to manage whatever questions come your way and should also help to lower your anxiety (this can make a big difference to your performance).

These are a few of the most common job-seeking mistakes that you will want to avoid at all costs to find your next role.
